Maryland joined the Union in 1788, making it the seventh of all the states in the US. It is the country's forty-second largest state, occupying 32,133 km2 worth of space. It is eighteenth most populated, with around approximately 6,177,224 individuals. Both these factors together combine to put the population density of Maryland at 632 persons per square mile - fourth among the 50 states. This state has had a long-standing reputation of being a center of arts and culture - being the home to The American Film Institute, The Filmore in the Discovery Communications office, The Strathmore in Bethesda and the Columbia Center for Theatrical Arts.
