South Carolina joined the Union in 1788, making it the eighth of all the states in the US. It is the country's fortieth largest state, occupying 82,932 km2 worth of space. It is the 23rd most populated, with around approximately 5,282,634 individuals. Both these factors together combine to put the population density of South Carolina at 175.45 persons per square mile - nineteenth among the 50 states. The residents of this state are known for their resilience in the face of conflict, and rising above and moving forward from a tumultuous past to make a better present and future. Plantation houses are by far the most popular in South Carolina, followed very closely by Charleston homes and country-style cottages.
