New York joined the Union in 1788, making it the eleventh of all the states in the US. It is the country's twenty-seventh largest state, occupying 141,297 km2 worth of space. It is the fourth most populated, with around approximately 20,215,751 individuals. Both these factors together combine to put the population density of New York at 416.42 persons per square mile - seventh among the 50 states. The state has a large history, going back far as early as 10,000 BC and the civilization of the first people, to the 1100s, when the native people ruled, to the Dutch and eventual English colonization, and finally the modern New York, which welcomes residents from all over the world.
