Missouri joined the Union in 1821, making it the twenty-fourth of all the states in the US. It is the country's twenty-first largest state, occupying 180,560 km2 worth of space. Both these factors together combine to put the population density of Missouri at 88.2 persons per square mile - thirtieth among the 50 states. The Show-Me State, which is its most common moniker, is a virtual kaleidoscope of several historical periods - from the indigenous cultures of the pre-Columbian era to the long period of European colonization, and from achieving statehood to going forth and playing a major role in the country's culture, polity and economy.
