Kansas joined the Union in 1861, making it the thirty-fourth of all the states in the US. It is the country's fifteenth largest state, occupying 213,100 km2 worth of space. Both these factors together combine to put the population density of Kansas at 34.9 persons per square mile - 40th among the 50 states.
